The United Nations Memorial for the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade is an innovative blend of 21st century art and design media. The Middle Passage: A Love Story was realized as a monumental work on paper and is the inspiration for this proposal, which hybridizes landscape/sculpture and is organized into four movements. The design, based on a ribbon form measuring approximately 180 feet by 80 feet, becomes amorphous in its scope and shape relative to the selected site. More than one thousand ceramic figures, flowing from a mosaic treatment towards bas-relief and three-dimensional imagery, tell the story of the Middle Passage, devoid of sentimentality and undeniable in truth.
