Housed on the University of Missouri – Kansas City campus, the James C. Olson Performing Arts Center serves both the university and the Kansas City Repertory Theatre (KCRep). Originally built in the 1970’s, the building was outdated on both the interior and exterior, existing acoustics and lighting were in sub-standard condition, and the stage was in disrepair.
Helix designed a renovation and 4,000-sq.-ft. expansion that addressed the functional deficiencies of the existing building, enhanced the patron experience and accommodates future production demands. The design team led representatives from UMKC and the KCRep through an interactive design process to develop a solution that met needs of both students and theatre patrons within the established budget.
The new facility includes a beautiful expansion of the lobby, substantial improvements to the Spencer Theatre performance space, an expanded patron lounge, new ADA compliant restrooms, expanded concessions, and a new exterior glass curtainwall facade that visually enhances the building’s presence on campus. Improvements within the performance space, including a new stage, lighting, acoustics, and seats, are transformative for patrons and performers, alike.
