The addition of 2400 sf and renovation of 7,770 sf resulted in a new ED of 10,160 sf that is truly state-of-the-art and meets the needs of the local community. A new frosted glass exterior canopy covers the walk-in entry with traffic being routed to improve the drop-off and pick-up of E.D. patients. A secure pass-through decontamination room provide seamless flow for contaminated patients from the exterior of the building into the ED.
An expanded, dedicated ED Waiting Room is isolated from the main hospital to provide ED patients and visitors with enhanced privacy and dignity. Floor-to-ceiling windows that bring daylight and a connection to nature help reduce anxiety in patients and visitors.
The new floor plan allows for direct visual observation of all treatment rooms from the Central Nurses Station. Sliding glass doors with transom windows enhance the patient connection to providers. All private Exam Rooms have dedicated “Family Space” that enhance patient privacy and provider access.
The Central Nurses Station is the hub of the new ED. Directly adjacent are the Doctor’s Work Area, Medications, and Central Supply which allow for collaboration and access between Physicians and Nursing Staff. The station has direct visual control of both entrances, the Secure Exam Room and the EMS offices.
Fully equipped private Trauma and Exam/Treatment rooms allow for more effective care. Treatment rooms are universal rather than specialized to maximize utilization. To accommodate OB/GYN, pediatric, geriatric, and behavioral health patients the plan includes 3 exam rooms equipped with the latest medical monitoring technologies for various levels of mid-acuity patients.
By implementing a thoughtful site-specific design concept, patients and staff feel special and cared for. The interior environment was created with a compelling regional aesthetic to promote comfort and healing. Forms and finishes are earthy, contemporary and reflective of the surrounding Uintah Basin landscape including crystalline blues, cool sages and the striated rim-rock of surrounding canyons and mountains. The polished olivewood accent panels are reminiscent of the Russian Olive trees that line local rivers.
This project is the result of intense collaboration between the design team and stakeholders. UBMC asked the architect to challenging the status quo and suggest new opportunities to change the culture of care in the ED.
“Providing the best in Emergency Care is the combined effort of our hospital staff, physicians, nurses and EMS Crew and we commend those recognized for striving for extraordinary care,” commented James Marshall, President & CEO. “Now that we have modern ER facilities, satisfaction has increased for patients as expressed in our recent 2015 Women’s Choice Award.”
