UNHO is the first residential complex of Mexican architectural studio TECTONICO in the Town of Tulum. It was born after years of reading and studying the natural environment and the architectural aesthetics of this small tourist pole in the Mexican Caribbean located in the heart of the Mayan jungle.
Two main elements are the guiding principles of the project, nature as the protagonist and the use of local materials setting contemplation frames of the on site vegetation. No original trees outside the building outline were cut and no hard flooring was used in outdoor areas to promote natural soil absorption and allow the growth of new vegetation. A small reforestation work was made using native trees of the Chaka species, whose ability to reproduce through sections of trunk of 1.5 meters of height allowed to multiply the felled trees in both the project property and neighboring properties and streets. In addition to the original vegetation, which is the predominant natural element, ornamental vegetation was added in visual details of the architectural project such as planters and terraces.
Regarding the tectonics of the project, the architectural materials were chosen under the premise of locality: chukum in tectonic elements, Zapote and Jabin wood in carpentry and exterior structures and Crema Maya marble in floors. Fifteen apartments in variations of studios, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments conform to the social program that integrates the project. Under a minimalist and humble premise that seeks to direct attention to the nature of the site, the program contains the functional elements such as kitchens and bathrooms with simple elements forged in concrete & finished in chukum and wood. Nothing stands out like contemporary luxury elements, marketing intentions or propaganda of "lifestyle". On the contrary, an intentional direction towards the opposite seeks to focus the experience on the contemplation of natural elements that Tulum offers to its increasingly alien visitor.
The sustainable field focused on a realistic approach rather than a marketing one, being the care of the existing environment and the generation of 100% of the energy requirements by means of photovoltaic cells the primary attention.
The interior design was carried out through collaborative work with Mobu Interiorismo and Alpama Diseño, being the same premise of respect for the pre-existing aesthetics of Tulum.
UNHO invites its temporary inhabitants to seek & enjoy the attractions of the ecosystem that this small section of the Mexican Caribbean offers, far from the luxuries and frivolities of contemporary life, a small approach to a more simple and close interaction to the natural environment.
