Blee Halligan Architects were commissioned by Sarah and Tony Patten to turn this unloved house into a light, bright and well functioning family home.
This site was situated on the periphery of the village of Aberthin, just outside Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales.
The existing layout of the ground floor areas were cellular and lacked a sense of flow or organisation. We looked to remedy this by focusing on a new volume, creating a light filled internal space and a new fluid transition between inside and outside. The primary elevation contained a mass tilted towards South, allowing the best levels of daylight internally and also reducing the impact of the new addition onto the garden. The resulting form was a shard-like extension, that pushed up and out into the garden, with large picture windows that took in the trees and sky, immersing you in the beauty of the natural environment. The pitched form also become an exciting counterpoint to the conventionally boxy spaces in the existing house.
