Phase I entails a 9,000 SF renovation to the first floor of Eckart Library on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus. The program includes approximately 30 new office spaces, two conference rooms, and other support spaces for the Ocean Observatories Initiative Cyberinfrastructure program.Considering the nature of the existing library as well as the local vernacular throughout the Scripps campus, we approached this project from the perspective of a permanent installation. The solution meets the functional needs of the client while its materiality, form, and flow were inspired by its dynamic site.
Phase II entails a 4,320 SF renovation to the first floor of Eckart Library. The program includes approximately 10 new office spaces, secured workshop space, one conference room, and other support spaces for the IT Department program. The design aims to blend high tech, high precision materials with the repetition and patterns found in the existing library design. The solution presents a modern face for the client while respecting and continuing the character of the library space by preserving the existing structural and ceiling grid that run throughout the first floor as a unifying theme.
Phase III entails a 14,385 SF renovation to the second floor of Eckart Library, bringing together 3 distinctly different program functions and user groups while embracing the diversity of students and academic programs with a mix of lecture/computer classrooms, study rooms, graduate student work spaces, and faculty/staff offices. Creating a space that addresses the different requirements for these components was challenging, but also presented an opportunity for dynamic interaction as well. The design focuses on creating opportunities along the circulation path, nodes of collaboration, where students, staff and faculty can have meaningful interaction. These spaces are meant to promote a collaborative educational environment where research and ideas flow freely throughout the space. The program includes 16 faculty/staff private offices, 5 shared graduate student work spaces, one conference room, 4 student study rooms, one 80 student lecture hall, and one 30 seat computer lab, along with other support spaces for the SIO Education Department.
