The University of Cincinnati Medical Center wanted to improve their main entry and lobby to create a more welcoming environment for their patients and visitors. Linear fixtures recessed into the entry canopy draw visitors into the lobby and provide efficient light to the site for improved safety and function. In the lobby space, The Lighting Practice strategically backlit the low ceilings, making the space feel less cavernous and more open. Illuminating the walls balances the electric light with the abundant daylight in the space.
The juxtaposition of the daylight-filled double-height East lobby adjacent to the lower West lobby created a challenge with lighting. The lighting design used a backlit baffle ceiling system that made the space feel daylit while also reinforcing wayfinding. With calculation studies and mockups, we were able to execute an impactful system while mitigating cost.
