"(The project) represents a significant architectural achievement for the campus, and yet, for all its complexity, the design result is stunningly simple to behold...”
- Rob Gayle, AIA, Associate Vice Chancellor, Capital Projects
STUDIOS renovated and seismically upgraded the 72,000-seat historic California Memorial Stadium, constructed in 1923 as a key element of the campus plan, which straddles an active earthquake fault. The project also includes interior game day and fan amenity spaces.
The stadium renovation is both a delicate historic preservation and a major seismic retrofit of a structure that literally spans the Hayward fault line; to achieve this, the bowl of the stadium was partially gutted while the historic exterior was preserved through an extensive temporary bracing system. The new press box structure appears to float above the bowl; it houses the press level, camera level, meeting rooms and the University Club.
STUDIOS also designed the new 145,000 sf Simpson Center for high performance student athlete training, which houses 450 athletes within thirteen of the University’s intercollegiate men’s and women’s teams. The principal goal for the project is to realize the Athletic Department’s “High Performance Initiative”, which is a program that provides a systematic, multidisciplinary approach to training athletes for optimal physiological and psychological health, personal development, and high performance. This goal is achieved through designing the spaces and program functions for maximum integration and collaboration amongst the coaches and training staff. The project also consolidates the athletics programs and operations to maximize synergies, cost-effectiveness, and integration with the campus’ core missions.
The program includes a major strength and conditioning space, sports medicine facilities, a study center, locker rooms, dining, offices, team meeting rooms, and a Wall of Fame that runs throughout the facility, highlighting both historic moments and past student athletes.
The training center is designed as a “land form” building, the roof of which forms a major plaza for the stadium. Although a completely independent structure, the shape of the center curves to “hug” the existing stadium.
STUDIOS worked in collaboration with HNTB Architecture on both projects.
