Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu — a person is a person through other people. The Ubuntu Pavilion takes the proverb literally: it is a structure that cannot exist unless many people make it. Its skin is assembled from 7,000 individually printed parts, every one crowd-sourced, crowd-funded and crowd-printed — reserved online by a sponsor, fabricated on a desktop Creality FDM printer, and carried to site bearing that sponsor's name embossed alongside its part number. No single machine, budget or author could produce the pavilion; a community of printers can. When it tours Johannesburg and Cape Town in 2027, the pavilion — realised with headline sponsor Creality — aims to set the record for the largest and most numerous crowd-printed FDM structure yet assembled: seven thousand parts, printed in hundreds of homes, studios and classrooms, converging into a single building.
The threshold, pulled out
The form begins with the Southern African dome hut — and with the observation that its most charged space was never the interior but the threshold: the low mouth where you stoop, where inside and outside negotiate, where guests are received. The pavilion deconstructs the hut and pulls that threshold out. A gourd-like dome is stretched until its entrance draws forward into a raised, open hood — a doorway grown to the scale of the whole building, a room that is all welcome and no wall. Visitors pass under the hood into a woven interior where the diagrid casts a shifting lattice of shadow, the hut's dim enclosure re-imagined as a porous, luminous commons.
One block, three lives
The skin is a diagonal lattice of interlocking printed "L" units, jointed like timber: self-centring tongue-and-groove nodes, pinned with timber dowels, threaded on continuous fibre rods that run the full length of every diagonal. Each cell carries three printed layers with three behaviours. The structural L-frame, printed in Creality's timber-toned filament, does the carrying — its members thicken where a frame analysis of the shell says the load actually flows, so the structure's effort is legible in its anatomy. An inner frosted panel is printed in glow-in-the-dark material: by day it diffuses light and tempers heat; by night the pavilion inverts, and the stored daylight re-emits as a constellation across the dome. An outer skin of translucent recycled-PET panels — each cut loose at one corner and peeled away from the surface — scatters sunlight, flickers in wind, and dapples the interior in glass-bottle greens and ambers: the plastic of the everyday returned as ornament.
Because every piece is unique, numbered and named, the pavilion is also a register — part building, part guest book, part distributed print farm made briefly visible in one place. Dismantled, its parts return to the people who printed them: a record-setting structure that ends its life the way it began, distributed among many hands.
