Ualá is a leading digital bank in the Latin American market. When choosing a new location for its offices in Buenos Aires, the company opted for a 2,000 m² floor in Paseo Gigena. This complex, located in front of the traditional Palermo Hippodrome, is known for its modern and innovative design that combines contemporary architectural elements with green spaces and commercial areas. The building, a former exposed reinforced concrete parking structure that had fallen into disuse, has been revitalized and repurposed, transforming into an urban hub that integrates offices, retail spaces, and recreational areas.
With the location established, the company organized a private design competition to create its new headquarters within a flexible, distinctive, and innovative space capable of reflecting its corporate values. Contract Workplaces won the competition, taking on both the design and the full execution of the project.
From the outset, the Architecture & Design team conducted an in-depth analysis of the company, its culture, and its people to identify the key pillars of its corporate identity. The new offices were envisioned to revolutionize the way work is done, enhancing the company’s innovative and disruptive culture.
The design concept aimed for a plastic, fluid, and organic form, prioritizing transparency and access to natural light. In line with this approach, workstations were arranged along the glazed perimeter, ensuring that all employees have access to exterior views and evenly distributed natural light.
At the center of the space, a series of oval-shaped pods were placed, serving as meeting rooms of various types, informal gathering areas, and phone booths. These pods were arranged as a “forest” of curves, inviting users to explore the surroundings and leading to a large cafeteria seamlessly integrated with a flexible work café. Here, the team can work in a relaxed environment that opens onto the building’s internal courtyards.
At the heart of the floor lies one of the project’s most iconic features: the vault—a space that reinterprets the most traditional element of banks. Since the company’s true treasure is its people, this vault symbolizes an open and flexible meeting area. Equipped with mobile and configurable seating tiers, this section was designed as a multifunctional space, ideal for presentations, events, meetings, or simply working and sharing ideas. This flexibility also mirrors the adaptable nature of the business.
When selecting materials, the team opted for those that complemented the spatial fluidity of the design. Noble materials and natural textures were used, such as unpolished granite crusts on the reception desk, symbolizing the company’s durability and solidity. Bamboo, a sustainable and elegant material, was used to finish the pods, contrasting with the exposed concrete of the original structure.
The vault received a distinctive treatment on its exterior cladding: it is completely encircled by an extensive circular library that underscores the importance of culture, education, and training in a cutting-edge digital company like Ualá.
Organic carpets and textiles in muted turquoise and pink tones added warmth and serenity to the environment. Strategically placed indoor plants between the pods served as a key biophilic element, creating a natural atmosphere within the workspace.
Lighting was also carefully designed to complement the space. Indirect and uniform lighting was selected for the entire office, paired with linear fixtures above the workstations to ensure precise task lighting.
The result was a modern and avant-garde space that combines technology and digital disruption with the calm and nobility of classic materials. Ultimately, it is an open and transparent vault that reflects the values of a company that has revolutionized not only the financial system but also the way it works.
