As the requirement of the owner, an old apartment on Sukhumvit 23 road, right to the heart of Bangkok, Thailand, has been developed into a seven-storey hotel named ‘TwoThree Hotel’ designed by the Bangkok-based architecture practice, ‘Design in Motion’. The small dimensions of the apartment rooms and their windows were found to be the major issue in the existing building as this resulted in the uncomfortable rooms with insufficient daylight.
To improve the existing deficient spaces, the architect decided to expand the room sizes and openings simultaneously to generate larger, brighter and more functional hotel rooms. In doing so, each former unused balcony is now playing a new role as an interior daybed corner.
However, there are also constraints in the small land area and building regulation as the distances between those new relaxing nooks and the adjacent lands are not wide enough and, therefore, any direct openings are not allowed on those refreshed walls where face directly the adjacent lands. To address this additional issue, recessed windows have been designed to employ extra indirect light for the interior spaces.
The architect not only has improved the quality of the rooms by these solutions but also expressly reflected these daybed corners to be the prominent language of the façade with the wooden skin contrasting with the plastered and white painted materials on the majority of the exterior walls. Consequently, other than its own characteristic of the building, this clean white wall with the touch of the wooden material could also make this hotel cozier and more comfortable for guests.
The limitation of the land area had also impacted on the landscape design solution. Instead of large trees, the vertical and potted garden have been selected with the inspiration of ‘small gardens on the general houses’ backyards’, as a variety of terrazzo pots’ shapes have been set out randomly to create small corners with greenery and friendly atmosphere.
