Challenge: A young doctor came to the architects requesting a custom home that reflected his family’s personal taste for sleek, modern design. The clients requested luminous spaces with minimal detailing reminiscent of the boutique hotels and spas they have visited.Context: recently developed suburban neighborhood Covenants: Sloped roofs, slate shingles, 60% masonry exterior, 3 car garage, main floor minimum square 2,000 SF, street elevations must be traditional Solution: The architects decided to design a home that would blend into the neighborhood, while simultaneously utilizing modern design techniques. The house massing was wrapped around the perimeter of the two streets creating a secluded courtyard space in the rear. The kitchen and living room are located adjacent to the courtyard space to accommodate large gatherings. The plan of the home is a study in procession, relationship of interior spaces to exterior courtyard spaces and a unique vertical circulation twist.
