*Project Description
Inspired from the slopes of Satpuda mountains and site’s rural context, the twin villa
conceptualized based on the complex weave of clients’ needs, regional climatic behavior,
geographical setting and modern aesthetic and utilitarian interpretations.
The whole site of the houses is divided into four parts. The southernmost portion of the plot is
saved for an organic garden. The middle part is dedicated to the main structure and private lawn.
The northernmost portion is planned for social gatherings and events. Carefully planned green
spaces soothe environment in Barwani’s extreme heat.
Clients are blessed with an extended family consisting of more than 8-9 members for each family
that calls for a huge and spacious yet humble abode. Conceptually, the ascending gradation in the
form of this architecture symbolizes the prosperity and growth of the client’s family and kin.
Two units and the layers of modular roof elements signify the individuality yet unity and identity
of friendship and kinsmanship. Such gradation complements architecture’s natural light and
ventilation design while buffering the heat. Weighted height in the southern side of the house
also draws shadows on the northern portion, centrally planned transcendental space can not be
missed while entering or exiting the house. The functionality and climatology of the house plays
an important and driving thread in planning the spatial arrangements of the house as per clients’
intentions.
The intelligent spatial splits of levels define semi-private and public spaces inside the structural
shell. One can observe the gradation of public space to semi-private to private areas in the house.
Taking this gradation outside the house, spaces extend themselves calmly through the private
lawn. Large windows in northern face of the house not only provide vivid frames for the garden
but also entice light for the darkest corners of the house. Following the contemporary frame
structure style, locally sourced bricks were added to reduce energy footprint. Similarly, in-situ
paver blocks were laid on foot-planes.
While deciding the use of material, placing the spaces and sculpting the form; basic concepts of
sustainability and green construction techniques seeped in the process.
