The project site is located on the shores of Erhai Lake in Dali, with a commanding view of the scenery of Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake. The site boasts a high density of buildings, including private residences and boutique hotels. Highlighting the unique features of this boutique hotel is both the owner's demand and the focal point of the project. Hence, as the completion of interior decoration approaches, the owner turned to Usual Studio for redesign and construction. Usual Studio endeavors to cleverly maximize changes to the architectural character and spatial ambiance, while also leveraging the existing transformed conditions to minimize project waste and reduce costs.
"The Sunset of Erhai Lake" is poetic and romantic, a natural spectacle that belongs to everyday wonders. Drawing inspiration from this, we extracted the forms of the sunset and sea, integrating them into the overall design of the architecture. Irregular arches create a new, breathing façade image, resembling the curves of the sunset and sea. The arches are arranged according to the original spatial structural grid, serving as individual scenic windows through which the architecture gazes towards Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake.
The design of the ground-floor courtyard continues the form and styling language of the sunset over the sea, with elevation changes creating distinct zones. Elevated ribbon-like structures envelop individuals, creating a sense of security and bringing people closer together, fostering social interaction within the space. Accompanied by the evening glow of Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake, people can relax and share their stories in a soothing ambiance.
The ground-floor lobby bar is integrated with the restaurant, themed around the immersion in twilight. The interplay of two colors, off-white and sandstone red, is employed in various functional areas, creating a warm and soothing ambiance. From long communal tables to cozy booths and face-to-face seating arrangements, a variety of seating options offer diverse leisure possibilities, ensuring that you can always find the perfect corner within the space.
The guest rooms are the most crucial aspect in reflecting the quality of the hotel, aiming for each room to facilitate a comfortable and leisurely vacation experience. The core concept of the overall guest room design revolves around psychological "healing," striving to create an experience that feels infinitely close to nature.
The courtyard guest rooms depart from the conventional separation between indoor and outdoor spaces by extending greenery and water features indoors, creating an experience where even indoors feels like being in a landscaped courtyard. Natural light refracts through the scenic water pools, painting patterns on the walls and leaving dappled shadows. These unconventional design methods allow the guest room experience to be infinitely close to nature, enveloping travelers' minds and bodies in a healing embrace of nature.
