Perched on a hill in the Southwest Hills of Portland, Twigg’s form is the result of a black plane folding and wrapping around a wood and glass volume. The folded plane enables the house to take advantage of selective forested views and provides deep overhang for protection from summer sun.
To further reinforce it’s presence on the forested site, window sills are raised off the floor, but extend as high as 16’ to capture the feeling of being in the trees as opposed to just viewing the trees.
The main level houses public spaces and features a deck off the kitchen that cantilevers into the forest. A light monitor near the entry opens to flush hot air out of the house during the summer, but is strategically oriented to provide extra natural light during Portland’s rainy winters.
A cantilevered master suite and all other private spaces are located in the lower floor.
Environmental concerns include solar water and electricity, a planted roof, super efficient reverse chiller for heating and cooling, staggered stud wall cavity framing and heat recovery ventilator that provides continuous fresh air.
