Tumo Studios is one of Tumo’s latest educational initiatives. The objective of the project is to create an educational environment that will bring leading professionals in the fields of design and crafts together. The project is focused on analog production, where digital tools may or may not be utilized as part of the design and production process, but the end result is to create a tangible product. The main target for Tumo Studios includes university age students and young professionals.
The site is located on the South-East corner of Tumanyan park at the opposite end of Tumo Center for Creative Technologies. The concept for Tumo Studios was to recreate the hill below the Hrazdan Bridge. This reminded us of the popular game Minecraft, in which the player digs into the earth to find materials to create new buildings and structures. The concept evolved and we set out to create a platform consisting of large containers that would be interchangeable and could be added as needed. One of the main reasons for choosing this design is to have an easily transportable workshop area that could be mobile and moved to different regions to help develop the level of education and fulfill the curiosity of those in villages and smaller towns in Armenia. The cost-efficient manner of container-oriented spaces for workshops is extremely useful since workshops always grow and will need more space in the near future.
