A Nature-Inspired Bengaluru Apartment by Weespaces Draws from Tulum, Southern California and India
Located in the leafy neighbourhood of Indiranagar, this 3BHK apartment in Bengaluru is designed by Vinithra Amarnathan of Weespaces for a California-returned couple and their young daughter. The design intent was to create a calm, grounded home that reflects its inhabitants’ sensibilities, while referencing places they’ve lived in and loved. The apartment’s aesthetic draws loosely from the relaxed tones of Tulum, the sun-washed modernism of Southern California, and Indian craft traditions, resulting in a home that feels contemporary and deeply personal.
The apartment follows a linear configuration with a central living and dining space connecting the private and semi-private zones. The layout includes a den, an open-plan living-dining area, a kitchen, a master bedroom, a guest bedroom, and a children’s room. At the heart of the home is the living room, anchored by a vintage kilim rug and layered with soft, neutral finishes. Adjacent to it, the dining area is visually demarcated by cylindrical columns and a series of wall niches that lend the space a gallery-like quality. The kitchen, designed for functionality, follows a more utilitarian rhythm within the home’s otherwise restrained material and colour palette.
The master bedroom is finished with lime-plaster walls and natural wood accents, while the guest bedroom, with its mottled green tone and minimal decor evokes the cocooned calm of a tropical retreat. The daughter’s room, by contrast, features a whimsical mural that adds playfulness within the overall pared-down aesthetic. The den, an informal space within the home, features floating ceiling beams and wooden flooring, offering an intimate retreat.
The material palette is simple and warm. Wood plays a central role, manifesting in the bedroom and den flooring, lattice headboards, floating ceiling beams, and sliding glass partitions. Lime-plaster-finished walls and marble flooring in the common area create a pleasant contrast to the wooden aesthetic. Decorative choices too, are deliberate and sparse. Colours are introduced through select interventions. For instance, a vintage kilim rug in the living area, the hand-painted mural in the daughter’s bedroom, and the immersive green hue of the guest room lend the home an eclectic but measured personality, avoiding excess while enriching the visual language.
Across the house, there is a balance between restraint and richness. It is at once warm, texturally layered and functional, offering a quiet counterpoint to the chaos of the city outside. Walking into it once could sense the ease of Tulum, imagine the sun-washed houses of South California, yet feel at home in India. It is in evoking a nod to three places all at once that this Bengaluru apartment by Weespaces finds its real ingenuity.
