This third phase implementation by Towers|Golde of the Unified Green Master Plan (Mossop + Michaels with T|G) extends the development of pedestrian outdoor space to the front of Newcomb Hall, the iconic centerpiece of the Newcomb College end of the greater campus green at the heart of the campus. Flanked by academic, performance and visual arts facilities, the new plaza creates a gathering space and multi-functional center, serving both informal university events and formal ceremonies. It also enhances both the presence of Newcomb on the Quad and its axial dialogue with McAlister Hall, the principal university assembly building at the other end of the Quad.
T|G’s design permanently removes parking, creates a ‘bridge’ to the green, adds outdoor classroom opportunities, and clarifies many pedestrian/vehicular points of conflict. The scheme unifies the building and the quad in both plan and elevation using granite and limestone as the common materials.
