-Nightingale's Nurse Cap-
A Symbol Rooted in Nursing Heritage
In Tsuruoka, Yamagata—a city shaped by the legacy of the Shonai clan—the new Shonai Nursing School reinterprets regional heritage through a contemporary architectural lens. Its defining gesture is a series of white exterior shades inspired by the Florence Nightingale nurse’s cap, a timeless emblem of professional dedication. These shades operate as a calibrated solar-control device that softens daylight and enhances thermal comfort, while their distinct silhouette communicates the dignity of the nursing profession and establishes a clear visual identity within the urban fabric. Together, they signal to the community that this is a place where the next generation of healthcare professionals begins its journey.
A Vertical Landscape of Learning
At the heart of the building, a vertical Center Hall rises from the ground floor to the penthouse, forming a luminous social spine. A staircase wrapped in Japanese cedar lattices weaves through this void, transforming circulation into a continuous “landscape of learning” that encourages interaction and dissolves the boundaries between classrooms. The auditorium—home to the school’s ceremonial “Capping Ceremony”—serves as the spiritual core of the campus. Carefully framed views toward the adjacent Shonai Hospital and the front plaza symbolically connect academic study with clinical practice, reinforcing the students’ evolving sense of professional identity.
Engineering with Honesty
The project navigated strict height regulations within a Category I High-rise District as well as flood-risk constraints. To secure the necessary spatial volume, the structure employs void slabs and flat beams that minimize floor-to-floor height. Mechanical systems are intentionally exposed, allowing technical necessity to become part of the architectural expression. This approach creates a sense of clarity and directness that mirrors the values of nursing itself, where precision and sincere care—te-ate(the healing touch)—form the foundation of the craft.
A New Civic Landmark for Tsuruoka
Perimeter greenery and pedestrian-friendly site design invite the community into the campus, giving the building a bright and open presence. The architecture honors Tsuruoka’s historic streetscape while positioning the school as a civic anchor for the region’s healthcare future.
