he program for this roof deck project called for a sunbathing platform and a partially covered spa area. The Owner had no preconceived notion of a particular design style, we were free to design the project as we saw fit. The project was largely inspired by the Temple of Laughter that Randal had designed just prior to receiving this commission. The concept of spheres which radiated from a fixed point in the ground led to curving, three dimensional forms which define the two deck areas. The Sun Deck features a "breaking wave" guardrail from the east, which takes on the character of a sailing vessel’s bow. A gangplank leads from the new spiral stair to the lower platform. The resultant design depicts the inevitable tidal wave that may crash over Pacific Beach when “The Big One” strikes Southern California. The Spa Deck features welded wire-mesh screening at the north elevation, which when overgrown with flowering vines becomes both a screen from neighboring properties and a colorful backdrop for the spa area. Canvas "sails" provide shading and privacy.
