Tsukiage-An is a famous traditional Japanese shop specializing in a type of seafood called Satsuma-age, which is a deep-fried fishcake. The shop is located in the center of Kagoshima-ken, Tenmonkan, which is a busy, tourist area.
The shop is designed in the Japanese modern style. To convey the shop’s originality, a gate-shaped frame surrounds the outer periphery of the façade. The addition of lights also differentiates Tsukiage-An from other shops in the vicinity.
In the shop’s interior, large display cases are laid out to indicate the four seasons, calling attention to the different flavors and types of fish used to make the Satsuma-age, which vary according to season. The ceiling slants upward, adding an impression of the Japanese “Wa” style, and the continuity of the louvers therein leads customers deeper into the shop.
Another important characteristic of the shop design is the ability to see how the Satsuma-age is created in the kitchen, which offers a sense of anticipation to the proceedings and allows the customer to see that the seafood that they are to be served is fresh.
The size, height, and visibility of the tables and furniture for the shop were carefully considered. Each piece is custom-made and designed for ease of use.
A hint of the shop’s logo appears in the original patterned cloth that garnishes the surface of the wall displays. The materials are woven using the same technique used for kimono obis. These touches inspire an alternately sophisticated and luxurious impression.
