Due to the need for increased workforce training in Trumann, Arkansas and the surrounding communities, the Sims-Talbot Adult Education Center was built through the support of state grants and private donations. Trumann was created as a company town by the Singer Manufacturing Company to build the wood cabinets for their sewing machines. Singer also built several structures such as the community building, the country club, and a number of houses for its employees. Many of the long narrow houses were connected creating a double shotgun style house. This provided inspiration for the double volume building.
As typical of classroom buildings, the education center is a double loaded corridor with classrooms, conference room, and other supporting spaces. The building volume becomes a diagram of the circulation while recalling the Singer homes of past. Interior circulation space open to the exterior with full height glass partitions. Similarly the lounge opens on to a porch space with a full glass partition, expanding the interior space through to the exterior. These same spaces are clad in a dark maple ceiling and walls, donated materials from a local wood supplier. The exterior of the building is clad in a locally sourced brick and sheet metal, reminiscent of the still existing Singer factory buildings.
The Sims-Talbot Adult Education Center continues a tradition of public buildings in Trumann by taking note of its history.
