Raw Materials for an Idea FactoryThe renovation of the Nelkin-Piper Building, in downtown Kansas City, involved preserving and restoring the romantic characteristics of a historic building while also transforming it to meet the needs of a busy advertising, public relations and branding firm, Trozzolo Communications Group.Helix developed a “design factory” concept to celebrate and support Trozzolo’s identity as a creative, youthful company whose culture is based on transparency, collaboration and smart risk-taking. Bright colors inspire and invigorate employees (magenta features throughout the building designate the spaces where ideas are likely to be generated), and many different styles of collaboration spaces allow them to gather in ways that suit the needs of the project at hand. Corridors lined with glass marker-boards capture ideas and facilitate communication among team members. The design was also a study in contrasts. In order to preserve the aesthetic of the existing building, Helix restored historic light fixtures, refurbished woodwork, installed vintage-style pedestal sinks, refurbished the historic tin ceiling, restored leather benches, and left plaster and masonry exposed in key areas. But we also inserted contrasting slick bits of architecture. The industrial language of our inserts pays homage to an old factory: industrial metal plate stairs, hot-pink powder-coated raw-steel reception desk, industrial metal lab cabinets, carerra marble slabs, vintage modern lounge furniture, sleek modern light fixtures with factory flavor.
