This family retreat, located in the tropical island of Sri Lanka, draws its inspiration from the many varieties of butterflies indigenous to the country, not only from an aesthetic point of view, but also from the structural quality of the constitution of a butterfly’s wings. These characteristics were studied and incorporated in the three-bedroom house along with the engagement of the program with the local cultural modalities. The house is made up of a four quadrant design that utilizes symmetry and repetition of components to facilitate an ease of construction while maintaining the look of a elaborate architecture. The design reflects local traditions of cross ventilation and a shaded perimeter, allowing openness to the outside during the day and introversion in the evening. This mix of vernacular and contemporary elements effectively combine, in the Butterfly Villa, to demonstrate the potential for luxury living with local traditional building values.
