Triphammer Mall was built in the 1950s on the outskirts of Ithaca, New York, as a typi¬cal neighborhood strip mall. Gradually en¬croached upon by larger malls, it underwent several renovations in order to keep up with increasing competition. By the early 1990s, it became clear that this dinosaur could no longer compete with the area’s newer, glitzier malls. Our solution was to create a cultural/retail/community venue that would serve the small business sector as well as the surrounding residential areas. The ad¬dition of diverse programs within an exist¬ing mall presented an alternative of extreme density that fostered urban conditions while maintaining the experience of the rural land¬scape without contributing to sprawl.
