We designed this contemporary roof deck in TriBeCa with custom planters, a pergola to provide much needed shade, horizontal fencing, a stainless steel heat lamp to keep warm on cool nights, and metal-trimmed furniture. For the custom-built wood elements in this garden, we used an opaque tan paint. The benefit to using a solid paint color instead of a stain is that it doesn't have to be re-applied every year, and it helps preserve the wood for much longer. Plantings include bamboo, a red Japanese maple, grasses, alberta spruces, and dwarf arborvitae spheres. We used grey fiberstone planters for the arborvitae spheres, which develop a white stone-like patina on them over time. All of the planters contain automated drip irrigation and low-voltage up-lighting for a dramatic nighttime effect.
