SAS was retained to renovate an existing top floor of a Tribeca
apartment for a young couple. The couple’s love of sailboats drove the
design toward the minimal and flat, as well as the careful development
of custom millwork, storage, and finishes.
The apartment, originally a one bedroom, one bathroom unit, was
converted into a two bedroom, two bathroom residence. The existing
stainless steel kitchen appliances, island, and cabinetry were retained
and reconfigured for the new layout. To accommodate the additional
sleeping and bathing spaces, SAS developed extremely efficient layouts,
storage, furnishings, and finishes. Bathrooms were designed to be
fabricated from a single material for floors and walls, with no shower
doors or extraneous hardware interrupting the space. The second bedroom-
served by a fold-down bed and concealed storage- also doubles as an
office. The master bedroom- served by a separate walk-in closet custom
designed to fit the clients’ wardrobe, a washer/dryer space, and
auxiliary storage for the house- allows the bedroom to be minimal and
relaxed, unburdened by extras. An existing skylight was re-framed and
outfitted with concealed lighting emphasizing its view to the sky and
water tower above.
