This family wanted the openness that modernism can bring, but needed space for toys, books, shoes, ornaments and art: all the things that make a house a home. In answer to this need, the architects developed a flexible, modular storage and display system that climbs three stories through the house, starting as shoe storage in the entry, becoming a guard and storage for books at the ground floor, and finally breaking into display space at the living room and stairs.
Crafted of 3/4 inch plywood cut into repetitive shapes and assembled with simple slip joints, the components of the system are all 48 inches square and subdivided into dimensions of 8, 12, 16 and 24 inches. This allows for an efficient and economical use of material and harmonious proportions, even when distributed in a deliberately 'random' pattern.
