"Our client bought two apartments in a listed building in central London with a view to uniting them into a comfortable duplex to live and entertain in. The original interiors were entirely altered in both apartments. Our project was to strip back the spaces to the original volumes, and to add new elements.
In the double-height volume created in the existing floor plates, a new staircase was conceived as a bold, sculpted form uniting the apartments. The stair is a self-supporting solid stone construction with a strong yet graceful presence. Large blocks were carved into solid units of three stairs each, giving the stair a clear tectonic that required master stonemasons of real skill.
A rare and beautiful silver-grey travertine was chosen for the stair and the floors throughout the apartments for its varied layering and colour tone."
