This project began as a box, a warehouse in which maps were printed. It is now the operations headquarters for Transurban, an Australian company that won the contract to develop and operate the Express Lanes on I-95 and I-495. This is a public-private partnership: the Virginia Department of Transportation controls the land that the warehouse occupies.

The building provides the high-tech tools needed for the work performed, while adding natural touches to soothe and minimize stress. Use of an existing, developed site provided the most opportunity for sustainability. Over two-thirds of the existing building materials were maintained for the new facility. The warehouse was opened from all sides and windows and were added. The central bay roof was changed to include north facing clear-story that brings light into the two-story control room. The control room features tiered seating and a 20 feet by 9 feet video wall which monitors traffic 24/7, 365 days a year.
