AHA! Cleveland is a multi-day festival of lights to celebrate the city's recent development boom and "illuminates" changes to the urban landscape. AHA! brings people from across the region together to animate significant public spaces using light and video art installations, as well as live participatory events.
As a featured artist studio, Obscura Digital created a monumental art projection on the exterior façade of the original Public Auditorium, one of the city's most recognizable architectural landmarks. Completed in 1922, the edifice was conceived as a tribute to the ideals of Cleveland: social progress, industrial achievement, and civic interest. Using ultra-high definition projection technology, Obscura transformed a 370-foot wide by 70-foot tall expanse of the facade into a canvas animated by fluid imagery of natural and manmade ephemera.
"Transformations" is the metaphorical evolution of Cleveland through the seasons. The show begins with a mysterious introduction (fall and winter) and progressively reveals colorful growth and mesmerizing change (spring and summer). The projected imagery consists of slow-motion details of nature, arts, music, and sports, all of which relate to the City. Disparate particles harmoniously assemble into objects and scenes, then gradually deconstruct to transition to the next image. The installation captures the spirit of the event and the ethos of contemporary Cleveland.
Obscura included imagery from participating artists Dana Oldfather, Mark Reigel- man, and Barry Underwood in the media. ChamberFest Cleveland performed an original composition by Harald Boyesen that incorporated field recordings, sound collage, and snippets of music inspired by the city's musical heritage.
The projection event provided a memorable site-specific experience, presented the life cycle and evolution of Cleveland over time, and captured the local attitude shift that has fueled an epic urban transformation.
