Located in the center of Neuilly-sur-Seine, the Arturo Lopez townhouse, built in 1899 by architect Paul Rodocanachi in the Louis XVI style and later acquired by the city in the 1970s, is entering a new phase of life. Dedicated to local residents, this cultural and heritage site—whose restructuring is being carried out by the agency—will host a range of services and activities that respond to contemporary practices and needs.
In order for the townhouse to reflect the city’s values and ambitions, the agency has reconciled heritage restoration with the modernization of the spaces. The original decorative elements are preserved, ceiling heights are increased, and all of the main reception rooms are restored for event-related activities. The reception hall, known as the Shell Room, has its own independent entrance, as does the media library. The multipurpose salons on the upper floor are directly connected to the entrance hall, which opens onto the main courtyard and the rear courtyard. This new, generous and welcoming reception area restores the former townhouse to its former prestige. From the first floor, a few notes from the music school can be heard, while a calm and friendly atmosphere prevails in the coworking space located on the upper level.
To facilitate the independence of the different functions within the townhouse, the agency proposed multiple access points—both private and public—without structurally fixing the program or the future use of the building. The large modern staircase, the backbone of the project, reorganizes the vertical circulation while creating new sources of natural light. Helical in shape and highly open, it reorganizes the distribution of the different spaces while capturing sunlight from the roof skylight and redistributing it down to the entrance hall. An elevator complements the circulation system and meets the technical requirements of the event spaces. Once a major hub of social life in the twentieth century, the Arturo Lopez townhouse reconnects with its past and becomes a vibrant sociocultural center for all residents of Neuilly.
