Transformation from Barn to Home: From Historic Longitudinal Barn to Contemporary Dream House in Galder
In the picturesque hamlet of Kerzel, part of Galder in North Brabant, an old farmhouse with a typical longitudinal barn has undergone a remarkable transformation. This barn, distinguished by its iconic passage running from the front to the rear—once used by horse-drawn carts and tractors—has been converted into a modern home. The project seamlessly blends respect for the building’s history with a sustainable and contemporary design, ensuring its readiness for the future.
Preserving Authenticity and a Recognizable Structure
The transformation focused on maintaining the characteristic features of this longitudinal barn. Its authentic structure, with the old passage serving as the spine of the building, has been kept fully intact. This means the historic path running from the front to the rear facade remains unobstructed, a tribute to the barn’s original function. The detailed brick masonry, a testament to craftsmanship of the past, was meticulously restored and now serves as a stunning backdrop for the contemporary elements that have been added.
The Markdal Integrated into Everyday Living
One of the most unique aspects of this transformation is the seamless connection with the surrounding landscape. Large glass facades at the rear of the home fully integrate the breathtaking Markdal into the living experience. The natural light pouring into the home enhances the sense of spaciousness and underscores the beauty of the location. Residents enjoy the serene and rustic atmosphere offered by the panoramic views of this exceptional environment.
Sleek Concrete Floors and an Energy-Neutral Approach
The new polished concrete floor on the ground level lends the home a modern and robust aesthetic. This sleek surface complements other materials used in the home, such as wood and glass. What makes this transformation particularly special is that the entire barn is now nearly energy-neutral. Through the use of high-performance insulation and sustainable installations such as heat pumps and solar panels, the property is not only environmentally friendly but also future-proof. This showcases how historical heritage and sustainability can work hand in hand.
The Kitchen as the Heart of the Home
The spacious kitchen forms the centerpiece of the home and has been designed as a space for cooking, gathering, and relaxing. The generous kitchen island, complete with seating, invites long evenings with family and friends. The dark wooden cabinets, with their visible and tactile grain, infuse the space with warmth and highlight the connection to the barn’s natural character. This harmonious combination of beauty and functionality makes the kitchen a place of joy and connection for its residents.
A Wooden Beam Ceiling That Tells a Story
The striking oak beam ceiling pays homage to the barn’s storied past. The original wooden beams and visible structural elements highlight the artisanal craftsmanship that went into the barn’s construction. Together with the warm tone of the wood, the ceiling creates a harmonious link between the historical and modern features of the home.
Architecture That Marries History and Sustainability
As the architect, my goal was to preserve the unique charm of this property while transforming it into a future-ready home. This journey began with a detailed design phase and progressed through permit applications and construction drawings, culminating in a completed home that honors the barn’s heritage. By carefully balancing preservation and innovation, we have created a property that is both practical and visually stunning.
A Home That Bridges Past and Future
This transformation demonstrates how a longitudinal barn can be reinvented as a contemporary and comfortable residence without losing its original character. The combination of the preserved passageway, the stunning views of the Markdal, and energy-efficient solutions makes this project a shining example of how history and modernity can complement each other.
