The main task and challenge was to design a contemporary building on a small plot and integrate it harmoniously into the urban fabric of the historic center of Grodno, while preserving the existing tree located within the construction boundaries.
Since there were no buildings or structures on the site that required restoration to their historical forms, it was decided to design a new modern building that respects height restrictions and the historical module, but without stylization or a pseudo-historical approach.
The silhouette of the building is shaped with careful consideration for preserving the tree located within the site. On the tree’s side, a significant corner volume had to be cut off, and the building responds to this impact — the façade grid stretches in the direction of the applied force, the window openings change in size, increasing as they approach the tree and forming large corner windows that bring maximum daylight into the interior. After a section of the volume was removed, the concentration of tension decreases, resulting in a slight recoil — a wave runs across the façade surface, gradually fading and shaping the plasticity of the brick façade. This effect is especially expressive on the end façade, where bricks protrude 80, 60, 40, and 20 mm and gradually recede into the wall. On the main façade, the bricks recess by 60, 40, and 20 mm.
The building was positioned on the site with a setback from the historic building line, demonstrating tactfulness toward its “older neighbors.” This also allowed the pedestrian sidewalk to be widened, creating a more comfortable urban environment.
Despite the small site area of 180 m², a two-story building with an attic was designed, with a total area of 370 m² and a usable area of about 300 m². The interior was conceived as flexible, universal spaces suitable for commercial rental.
The building’s concept is inspired by the historical brick architecture of the city center, but reinterpreted in a contemporary way. The choice of brick as the primary construction material, aside from its historical significance, allows for the sculpting of the façade’s plasticity. In this project, brick “forms the soul of the building” and enables it to “communicate” with its surroundings in its own language. The façade, as if alive, changes depending on the lighting. Each side of the building adapts to the urban context, while together they form a unified whole.
Hand-molded brick made from natural mineral raw materials — an environmentally friendly product — was used in the construction. The expressive details and complex brickwork emphasize the unique character of the façades.
The building, while aligned with the scale of the surrounding development, maintains a balance between modern architectural solutions and the authenticity of the preserved historic fabric. It adapts to the context yet retains its individuality.
And one of the main elements influencing the building’s form was the tree.
