The residence is in Ganemulla, a suburb of Colombo, in a rich neighborhood where there was an existing house from 1960’s which had to be demolished to put up the new residence. The access to the property is through a 10 feet wide private road which is connected to a 30’ Road from Ganemulla.
The shape of the site is a wedge. Along the eastern boundary is the access road and this is double the length of the western boundary which is the rear space to the property. All four sides of the property is surrounded with existing residential premises except for the access Road. Southern property is with fairly a lush vegetation and the house was designed to make it as a part of the residence’s landscape with the borrowed views when entering in to the site, through all windows and also at the terrace over the car porch.
At the very beginning of the design it was challenging to orient the mid as the site is in a wedge shape but after many options considered with the client also we could finalize the layouts aligning with the Clients requirements.
The Uniqueness of the house is that it has entrances and exits to all four sides, the northern side of the property is dedicated for services and kitchen access but other three sides are opened to gardens to step in. Building language is Sri Lankan Traditional Elite as there are many precedence’s present in the area. The details were carefully designed without any replication of the existing precedent in similar buildings and specially the detail of the molding apron is inspired from the Kandyan Dancers Dress and it blends perfectly for bringing the desired mood. The house is having the concept of living around the house as it was inherited from Sri Lankan Vernacular as there is much more to be experienced while building a dialogue with nature. Interior details of the residences is to bring the luxury and the richness representing the traditional glory.
