The capital city and a major economic and political hub of Yemen, Sana’a offers a rustic and alluring ancient aura to its ever growing population, with clusters of mid-rise earth and mud towers having pleasing geometric patterns of white gypsum and burnt bricks. While travelling through the narrow streets of the city, the soothing and subdued feel of these mid-rise houses captivates the attention of the visitor, while displaying the rich history and religious culture of the city.
Evolving rapidly, in terms of economic and commercial development, Yemen has been subjected to a significant population growth in the present years. Aligning with a far-sighted vision of enhanced development in Yemen, the client collaborated with a Mumbai-based architectural firm, Atelier ARBO, to visualize and execute a high-rise apartment building of 36 residential floors in the city of Sana’a.
A clear, straightforward approach, in agreement with the comprehensive and specific set of the client’s requirements, guided the design towards a conscious and spacious arrangement of spaces on each floor. Focusing on creating a tall, slender apartment building, each floor has only two apartments with a common lobby separating them seamlessly. Two lifts and a staircase core facilitates effective vertical transportation, while a ventilation duct takes care of the optimum air circulation of each apartment.
A spacious living space welcomes the residents into the house, while a guest room, a kitchen, a powder room, a master bedroom with an attached bathroom, and two additional bedrooms with a common bathroom strategically encircle the central living room. Becoming a comfortable abode for a family of about four to six members, each house smoothly segregates the public and private spaces, ensuring the privacy of the residents when guests visit their homes. Taking the local height and plot limit building regulations of the region into consideration, the floor plate occupies an area of about 225 square meters, that is, around 2,500 square feet.
Owing to its innate strength, durability, and malleability, steel became the optimal choice for the construction of this modern yet traditional skyscraper. The incorporation of large glazed windows having solar reflective glass in all the rooms of each house, ensures abundant intake of daylight and cool breeze, through cross ventilation, while effectively keeping the harsh desert heat out. Beautiful geometric patterns merge together to form the facade of the building, which emits a warm, enticing glow of soft lights at night. Drawing inspiration from the evolution of a distinct architectural style of the region, the use of woven brick and concrete, to create these mesmerizing patterns, pays homage to the deep-rooted authenticity and ethnicity of Sana’a.
Actively collaborating with the client, delving deep into the rich architectural history of Sana’a, and researching the statistics of the increasing population of Yemen, highly influenced the design and planning process. The design team strove hard to create a structurally stable yet aesthetically-pleasing high-rise apartment building that envisions a comfortable living environment for the citizens of Yemen.
