This project originated as American School TPCA Academy moved to a new premise in Taipei City. The existing building needed to be renovated as we began the design process; the decision is to respect the existing genius loci forces. The goal is to create a learning space that is filled with hope and love.
In the beginning, the design concept originated in our belief for human goodness as we pray with our hand gesture. This symbolizes the christening of our faith. We believe that school is the beginning of this journey, as we began the spatial planning and conceptual phase of the design, we concretize the gesture of prayer into the three dimensional division of the walls. The axial rotation reflects the multi-faceted meaning of the prayer. This is achieved thru the dividing glass walls as they intertwine with the circulation, layering our faith.
In addition, the natural environ hinted the openness in the eastern side of the building, as the abundant sunlight and tree groves inspired the dancing chiaroscuro interplay. We placed many green houses on the eastern side to create an indoor garden for the students and teachers. As the light stimulate the shadow play extending to the greenhouse.
We long for the peacefulness we find in nature, therefore, we propose a learning space that may contain a bit of nature within. The green box may be used as green house, fish tank or just plain pet bin. This gives a variety of combination to the teachers and student alike. The hand on experience will enrich the learning experience.
The swaying green shadows reflected within, the student's laughter and presence within the room will become a vivid and unforgettable learning experience for the students.
