Located in Brooklyn, New York, on a quiet tree-lined neighborhood, the townhouse is situated in the middle of a historic block of brownstones with a distinct 19th century character.
To maximize flexibility and allow as much light into the space, the ground floor was designed with an open floor plan. Translucent moveable partitions were also installed to create a temporary enclosure for a guest bedroom.
In the rear, a new two-story addition of exposed steel frame, wood windows and sliding doors was built to bring in as much natural light and to create a contrast to the traditional style of the house. The new atrium, a double-height open space allows a spatial connection between the existing upper floors of the townhouse, the new ground floor and rear garden. A new stair with an integrated wet bar cabinet below, enables the owners to move freely between the fully renovated kitchen on the first floor and the ground floor.
