This existing theatre is the heart of a Manhattan private school. It accommodates student performances and ceremonies, and also functions daily as a classroom. The renovation was planed to invigorate the functions of the theatre and beautify the space. The school shares the bottom of a complex with a high-rise condominium resulting in a façade that is very small despite of its large complex interior space. This façade does not function as an icon or expression of the school. Our proposal emphasizes the role the theater plays as the keeper of the school spirit, where memories of school days are generated.
The theatre is located within the brick walls of a late 19th Century settlement house. One wall of the space preserves the existing brick façade which represents the history of the school. The other side of the room has a large concrete wall supporting the upper high-rise. In order to improve this imbalance we proposed folded wood wall panels that echo the richness of the existing brick. The entrance is also dramatized with wood finishes and concealed lighting. To accommodate the many users; dancers, choral groups, drama groups, the stage edge was extended with custom-made retractable steps. A new audio-visual control system and speakers will improve sound quality and make the space user friendly for both teachers and students. A new lighting scheme utilizes new and existing fixtures to provide performance lighting as well as functional classroom lighting. All of the interior finishes have been refurbished and a new color palette introduced.
