This new desk in a 1965 Walter Gropius designed mid-rise replaced the existing lobby desk/directory that had been added in the 1980’s. Functionally the desk was to act as an arrival point and a guard’s security station for after hour building access. Conceptually the new desk was designed to be lighter in scale and relate to the original design of the modernist structure. The building directory was removed from the desk and a digital directory was placed in the precast opening that once housed the original tenant directory. The desk relates to both the module of precast panels and brass strips within the terrazzo flooring. The overall desk length and privacy panel divisions respect and relate to those building modules. A void within the privacy panel was created to reduce the mass of the desk and allow the flooring to slide through the panel. The thickness of the desktop and waterfall side panels are equal to the thickness of the original Gropius designed stair handrails. The black solid surface material mimics the color of the original ceramic tiles used in the elevator lobby. The 2 ⅜”w x ¾”h walnut glued up privacy panels are the same construction as the original handrails. The finish on the walnut will allow it to darken with age and sunlight exposure to resemble the original walnut. Complementary benches using the same design concepts were also added. The walnut center panels penetrate the waterfall side panels to expose the end grain of the laminated walnut and relate to the width of the handrail beyond. The placement of the benches relates to the building elements / module while at the same time to the new desk panels.
