Paris, City of Light … That is the definition of the French capital that inspired our project for the Signal Tower.
Today at La Défense, a strongly symbolic building must be inscribed in a collective vision of the city and made to participate in the urban legend. Creating a flame of light in the sky over La Défense and Paris, the approach underpinning the project is characterized by four key oppositions to the environment – oppositions of form, colour, movement and context. It is by focusing on the “entirely” different that we are able to unite the built universe of La Défense, a phenomenon demonstrated, in its own times, by the Grande Arche.
Thus, the Signal Tower is a “flame”, a curved, vibrant outline in the urban sky, a shifting shape inserted into the site with a punctilious concern for standing out from the context. It is designed as a counterpoint to its environment and, thanks to this approach, like the Eiffel Tower, it is a faithful representation of the founding metaphor in which Paris recognizes itself and offers itself to the world.
By both day and night, the distant urban landscapes of La Défense are immobile. What changes are the light and the wind. But what if, in the city, there were towers that metamorphosed, built objects like flames whose colours varied? Often, nocturnal lighting makes such illusions possible, but the diurnal reality remains static. The flame of La Défense is an object the colour of which shifts and vacillates in parallax fashion. At night, its projects its reflections like so many embers of light. The esplanade at La Défense is divided into two sections. The first, close to the Pont de Neuilly, is laid out in a traditional scheme of planted spaces. The second, which begins at the Agam Fountain, is a large mineral plain bereft of flora. Meanwhile, the “flame” emerges from a forest: it can only be reached by means of a stroll through the trees. It is, therefore, a singular object, totally protected by its atypical context in the environment of La Défense.
Paris, Ville Lumière… C’est cette définition de Paris qui a inspiré notre projet de tour Signal.
Pour construire aujourd’hui à la Défense un bâtiment qui revête un caractère symbolique fort, il faut l’inscrire dans une vision collective de la ville, le faire participer à la légende urbaine.
Créant une flamme de lumière dans le ciel de la Défense et de Paris, notre projet relève dans sa conception de quatre oppositions clefs avec son environnement – oppositions de forme, de couleur, de mouvement et de contexte. C’est par le « tout autre » que l’on peut fédérer l’univers bâti de la Défense, comme la construction de l’Arche l’a montré en son temps.
Ainsi, la tour Signal est une « flamme », tracé courbe et vibrant dans le ciel urbain, changeante et placée dans son site avec un souci pointilleux du hors-contexte. Elle forme un contrepoint à son environnement et, grâce à cela, comme la tour Eiffel, elle est une fidèle déclinaison de la métaphore fondatrice dans laquelle Paris se reconnaît et s’offre au monde.
De jour comme de nuit, les paysages urbains lointains de la Défense sont immobiles : ce qui change, c’est la lumière et le vent. Mais s’il y avait dans la ville des tours qui changent ? Des objets construits qui soient comme des flammes, dont la couleur varie ? Souvent l’éclairage nocturne permet de telles illusions, mais la réalité diurne demeure statique. La flamme de la Défense est un objet dont la couleur varie, vacille au gré des mouvements que l’observateur fait autour d’elle. La nuit, elle projette des éclats comme autant d’escarbilles de lumière.
À la Défense, l’esplanade comporte deux parties : la première, proche du pont de Neuilly, est agencée en un schéma classique d’espaces plantés. La seconde, à partir de la fontaine Agam, est un grand plan minéral, sans aucune plantation. La « flamme » émerge quant à elle d’une forêt : elle ne peut être atteinte qu’après une promenade au milieu des arbres. Elle est donc un objet singulier, totalement protégé par son contexte atypique dans l’environnement de la Défense.
