Villa Kristiansen / Kværne, Nøtterøy
The house is built on a steeply sloping site near the sea, overgrown with old oak trees. The family wanted a rational modern home which could also be their summer house. The future possibility of a second house at the back of the site also had to be taken into account.
The compact house is slotted into the site without damaging any trees. Openings on all sides admit a sequence of views in and out as you pass through the three levels of the house, and the old trees become ”pictures on the wall”, contrasting the views out to the fjord.
The lower floor has sprayed concrete retaining wall against the slope. The exterior panelling is Canadian red cedar.
