The project is a concept for ’block 80’ as well as a vision of a high-quality and sustainable cityscape in a developing district of Oulu. The new city block situated by the waterfront at Toppila Shore is shaped like a sheltering, embracing hand. With its consolidated shape, it asserts itself in the big-scaled area of the former harbour. The proposal starts a dialog with the local history, the existing red brick mill, the silo and the large scale of the historic Toppila Shore. By transforming the old harbour mill typology into a modern shape, with facilitated new urban functions, the historical context is transformed into a new progressive identity.
The proposal is based on a framework supporting up-to-date urban lifestyles, which incorporates handling today’s environmental challenges. The closeness to the waterfront is the area’s most important asset. To enhance the interaction with the Oulu River, at the heart of Oulu, a new water surface is introduced in the centre of the block.
What could appear to be a complex play with the roofscape, is in fact a conscious consideration of site-specific conditions. The design aims at protecting the living out- and indoor space from cold winds and avoiding traffic noise, in addition to making the most of waterfront views and safeguarding sunlight for the apartments and the yard. More exclusive apartment types, or row houses, are placed in the middle of the block, with a direct connection to the water.
The proposed building is adapted to the laws of nature, its design based on climate, wind and sun studies. It is self-sufficient in terms of heating, its high thermal mass allowing the heat indoors to be harvested and recycled. Clean and renewable energy is generated with solar collectors and by using passive solar heat in the closed-in terraces and winter gardens. During the coldest days of the year, the excess heat from the combined heat and power plant nearby is put to use. In the hallway of each apartment a touch screen monitors the energy consumption and controls the climate.
All of the apartments have a river view and most of them are duplex with a two storey high winter-garden. The shell structure has a bright, light concrete finish similar to snow, whereas the interior part and the row houses have a warm, wooden character.
