Layers of History
A new living layer was created for this historical tol structure located in Talas, Kayseri, without disturbing its texture. It was studied how the structure could be transformed in a way that respected its past but also included contemporary living habits. This project was a matter of “making the old visible with the new” for us. Without intervening in the load-bearing system of the space, we designed contemporary structures and details that define the boundaries of the interior and exterior spaces. Each addition was made to contrast with the existing stone texture but not compete with it; on the contrary, it was ensured that it made it more visible.
Exterior
When addressing the courtyard area; a horizontal pergola structure was developed to lighten the strong vertical effect of the stone walls. The white-toned, rhythmic metal structure; both creates shadow plays and provides some privacy to the space. We supported the warmth of the courtyard with a natural textured chandelier and wooden seating elements. The blue metal staircase is one of the modern touches of the project. A bold and graphic effect was tried to be given among the natural stone and earth tones in the surrounding area. In the color selection, we aimed to establish harmony with the natural landscape and the tones of the sky in the surrounding area. The blue metal staircase is one of the modern touches of the project. Interior Design:
Stone vaults were the most important element carrying the spirit of the structure. Without touching them, we redefined the spatial structure with only lighting and furniture arrangement. The curved lighting line running along the ceiling allowed the form of the stone vaults to be observed with different details in dim light. The lightness of the structure was felt with linear LED lighting, thus establishing a balance between the weight of the stone and the movement of light. We turned to modular systems in furniture. This is a living area; it can be used both as a special conversation corner and as a bar, dining and relaxation area. The furniture we chose has flexible and timeless forms, and the color palette is left in neutral tones, creating contrast with tones such as blue and black in a few places. We wanted the blue shelf system we chose as the bar module to provide both function and focal point to the space. This is a living interior volume that can transform into different scenarios at different times of the day.The last section of the long and thin stone structure was used as a bedroom in the cave area created with natural soil. A calm and natural living space was created by staying completely within the natural framework in lighting and material selections. This project was not just a renovation project for us, but an attempt to establish a timeless dialogue. We wanted to create a living and transformable space where the memory of stone and modern lines accompany each other. This structure, where we bring together the balanced dialogue of contemporary lines with the silent expression of stone, has been transformed into a sincere bridge connecting the past and the present.
