TOJIRO KNIFE GALLERY TOKYO is the first flagship store outside Niigata for knife manufacturer Tojiro, located in Tokyo’s Kappabashi Kitchenware Street. The gallery introduces the brand’s extensive lineup while offering a cultural hub where visitors can experience Japan’s knife-making heritage and the spirit of craftsmanship.
Highlight 1: Iron Grid Design
Inspired by traditional Japanese lattice patterns and Tojiro’s manufacturing environment, iron grids were adopted as the primary structural element. The walls are made as thin as possible to maximize display space, while in the central area, the ceiling is composed solely of iron grids, creating openness and expansiveness despite the compact footprint.
Highlight 2: Maintenance Room & Display Method
The gallery incorporates a maintenance room equipped with the same machinery used in Tojiro’s Tsubame factory, where artisans sharpen and repair knives in view of customers. The exhibition design reflects the gallery’s role as a “hub for maintenance culture” by adopting a layout that suggests the relationship between a whetstone and a knife—making it appear as if knives rest directly on a stone. This approach embodies Japan’s culture of sharpening and usage in a continuous cycle, allowing visitors to engage deeply with the traditions of cutlery care.
Highlight 3: Materials and Environmental Response
Built as a reinforced concrete structure with no windows, the gallery uses wood wool cement boards across its interior. These provide insulation, humidity control, and soundproofing, well-suited for Japan’s hot and humid climate. Materials such as iron grids and wood wool cement boards echo those used in Tojiro’s factory, creating a seamless integration of industrial essence and harmonious spatial tones.
TOJIRO Knife Gallery Tokyo conveys both the authenticity of the production environment and the sincerity of its artisans, offering a space where the depth of Japanese knife culture and its contemporary relevance converge—delivering a globally resonant retail experience.
