A semi-temporary construction for the Dorich House, Kingston, based on the Todaiji Temple's gateway design and structure. The purpose is to provide a sheltered pavilion space for the Univesity owned, Dorich House, on the edge of Richmond Park on Kingston Hill.
The reason for using this Japanese example, is to research first hand how the traditional craftsman built these extraordinary wooden temples, in the early 8th Century. Consequently providing the Studio with key knowledge of Japanese crafts and techniques, that will be taken into our individual Part 1 design projects.
All materials have been sponsored by James Jones & Sons timber company, and the project is under the guidance of Takeshi Hayatsu and Simon Jones.
