With a vision for enhancing the year-round quality of life for the residents of its community, the Green Bay Packers sought to leverage and extend the tourism impact of its beloved Lambeau Field through Titletown – a mixed-use, entertainment district. Integral to their vision became Titletown Plaza, the district’s 6.5-acre park. A former big-box parking lot, the design transforms underutilized land into a new community amenity inspired by and rooted in the topography, geology, and climate of Wisconsin as well as the thriving football energy of its community. The Plaza includes a destination playground, ice skating rink, sled hill, football field and games court.
Based on Wisconsin’s winter heritage, forms evocative of ice shards were integrated throughout the Plaza as a harmonizing device. A two-story sledding hill – which doubles as the roof of a building – bridges over an ice-skating rink. Although its main function is for users to enjoy a ride down the slopes, the feature has a dual design to function as an occupiable green roof, offering users with a breathtaking view of iconic Lambeau Field and surrounding town. The 36,000-square-feet, pigskin-inspired playground is designed to be a modern, innovative play destination, inclusive and accessible to all children regardless of age, skill or ability. The layout references football plays through an intricate network that encourages visitors and children to wander and explore the entire site. Partnering with the NFL Play 60 program to promote movement and play as a feature, a 40-yard area enables children to race each other and test their speed and strength, promotes agility and coordination.
