Two young entrepreneurs, with various working hours approached us for a adobe. Their small nuclear family had a lot of ethical background spanning three generations in their upcoming space. Mother used to allocate her time in devotional prayers and television schedule, 13 year old boy resides in Ooty, spends weekends with three of them with jamming sessions and alluring with books. They need a two car park, master and parent's bed in the ground floor plate, a separate access to utility with dual kitchen.
They had been influenced by the village life pattern and their mother lived her three quarters in the ancestral village, insisting the kid also to get sprit of the livelihood. It shouldn't be new for the mother and it shouldn't be old to kid was their primary concern, eventually needs to be timelessness.
Site situated in a exurbia context with few plots being built around it. A tiny plot of about 13.70m (45' 0") x 15.25m (50' 0"), were the space for the family needs to be adopted within the 209 square meter ( 2250 sqft ) of land. Madurai being warm humid climate, and has hot days three seasons a year.
From old architectural ideologies we borrowed few concepts to get a stint of the tradition and modern in an eclectic style. Muttram (Courtyards), that brings in light and air. Teak chettinad columns, juxtapose the materiality. Atangudi tiles, comes from a geographical location for its implicit use of local mud, oxides and the cement mortar to generate the floor tile. Traditional roofing system with projected eaves with running corridors to create recreative space. Thinnai space, a projected seating corridor at foyer (veranda), acts as a semi public space. Jali and louver system ventilates the space and gets a visual interaction with the outer space without affecting the privacy. Colored glass, that lets in the filtered light, creates amazing insight within the space and materials being naturally finished and looks rustic.
A pragmatic design process initiated with vastu, adding it up by user related functions. Whole idea was to be more socially connected space, by reaching one another in every means. Being a small family, the visual transparency combined with ambient amount of light and ventilation through traditional process, like stack effect, integrating living with micro court and airy stairway.
Central part of the site invites the entry of the house, Double height veranda engulfs the semi public space with thinnai. Humongous door, from floor to beam with brass handles incised in it. That opens out to tall hand crafted chettinad wooden pilotis, Further which the court extends to course of landscapes to stone faced wall and leatherette finished granite edging across the courtyard. North east corner etching the family space, harmonies with dining and front kitchen with a low wall to have a linked social interaction. Back kitchen and utility occupying south eastern corner with a separate access to it. Living breathes out to a micro court, accessible by the sliding doors, descents the bamboo grooves inside the space.
South west with master bed attached with closet and toilet and parent bed at north west, with the louvred window overlooking the road. Central part is being amalgamated with staircase and a small study interacting with living, courtyard and dining space.
Upper plate envisage as more of collective family space, which accommodates two bedrooms, a multipurpose and a family space. Study space in the lower plate is perceived as family space that overlooks the courtyard and the foyer having a visual connection to the lower floor, bedrooms are placed at the same locale in the upper floor plate. The space above the porch, is being mutated as a multi utility space, which drops a foot and a half from the upper floor plate.
Multipurpose space is designed with indigenous materials, the athangudi tile, Mangalore tiled roof, which cuts down the heat and the use of wooden louvre screens to get aloof of fresh air from the north and eastern direction. A small ledge projected from the low height wall is being claded leatherette granite finish. Morning eastern light gets illuminated with layers of colored glass on the eastern edge to the multipurpose space.
Facade, emerges as a eclectic style, thrives to get the essence of rustic finish to perpetuate the raw feel by rough stone wall cladding, white plaster, patterned wall inscribing their family tree, exposed concrete and wood fixed with mild steel to rationalise the nature of the holistic design.
