The Tianyuan Residence reimagines traditional courtyard living by preserving the essence of the central hall within a contemporary design. Located in Tainan’s Shenei, the project breathes new life into the Chen family's ancestral home, known as "gǔcuò"—a term for old dwellings deeply rooted in local identity. Rather than simple preservation, the design team focused on reconstructing the courtyard layout while retaining the original orientation and spatial rhythm, fostering cross-generational dialogue.
The design carefully adjusts proportions and heights, creating a cohesive visual rhythm that culminates in the main hall—the family's central gathering space. The preserved façade of the central hall, paired with modern materials like wood-textured concrete, serves as a spiritual anchor. The central courtyard connects spaces and emotions, drawing in natural light and ventilation, and is paved with a checkerboard pattern of red bricks, symbolizing the layering of time and memory.
Inside, a wide-span timber structure blends traditional craftsmanship with modern scale. Reclaimed red bricks, roof tiles, and old door panels are reassembled, weaving remnants of the past into the present. The project is a reconstruction of memory itself, where historic materials are recontextualized to honor tradition while speaking a modern architectural language. Tianyuan Residence is more than a home; it's a vessel of memory and emotion, reflecting a vision of peaceful, multigenerational living.
