Our
project, entitled “Dubaiing”, aims at reversing the whole
developping process by defining the new emblem as an international
trademark which will develop itself and circulate all over the world,
outside the city boundaries.We
have chosen to express the trademark Dubai through its arabic
translation, turned into an ideogram to be promoted, circulated and
sold.The
object freely moves around and above the city. It is inspired by the
Zeppelin technology. The structural concept lies on a set of helium
tanks holding the roof-billboard (showing the trademark) and hanging
various buildings.The
structural concept rests on a static bipolarity. It is the result of
the opposing forces which enable the building to levitate. The first
helium volume, concentrated and linear, carries the roof-billboard.
The second helium volume, fragmented and stretched, supports a set of
programs. They load down the vessel to stabilize it and prevent any
wind-related swinging. These massive structures maintain the sign in
a horizontal position. Their gathering draws a new architectural
outline and evokes an inverted skyline. The base of this outline
becomes its roof or vice versa its inhabited head becomes its
ground-floor.
The
inverted skyline head will then be inhabited by six programs which
would also stand as panoramic viewpoints. Either open (3 panoramic
terraces) or closed-in (children library, conference rooms,
bar-restaurant), they offer a vast number of panoramic viewpoints
over Dubai.Our
levitating building tackles the issue of access and anchoring. Forget
about preconceived and linear ideas such as lifts, escalators, or
stairs. Here, balloons transport visitors to the various belvederes.
They take part in the architectural discovery of the object and add a
sensorial substance to the visitor’s journey. Therefore, each
journey is unique and shows the belvedere from a specific viewpoint.
